A popular Barberton gazebo is up for a makeover at Monday night’s City Council meeting, along with several other grants from the Parks and Recreation Department.
A $25,000 grant will be voted on for repairs to the 30-year-old Lake Anna gazebo, including roof repairs, structure improvements, painting, stage area enhancements and better access to the gazebo, said Shane McAvinew, parks and recreation director.
“It was built right and we’d like to see it last another 30 years,” said council member Craig Megyes.
Also up for vote are grants for two park programs, a $2,400 grant for “A Day of Play” and a $1,000 grant for “Senior Sip & Paint.”
“A Day of Play” will gather the Barberton community to four area parks: Tuscora, Avilee Webb, Edgewood and Crisman. Each park will feature face painting, music, food and special activities specific to each park.
“It’s more for residents of Barberton,” McAvinew said. “We want to keep it local so each section of town can walk to their event.”
“Senior Sip & Paint” is a senior arts program that will give Barberton senior citizens a chance to socialize.
A $1,000 grant for the Barberton recycling program will also be on Monday’s City Council agenda. The money will be used to buy trash receptacles for events in town. The ones available for events now have been overflowing because they are not large enough.
“With all the events growing so large we don’t have enough receptacles to support them,” McAvinew said.
