BARBERTON: City Council passed emergency legislation Monday evening extending the contract with Waste Management by 90 days.

The move will allow for a possible transition to another refuse/recycle pickup company beginning March 1.

The city is considering bids from Waste Management and Republic Services.

"At this time, Republic has the edge," city Service Director Elwood Palmer said. "But we need the additional time in order to be certain it is, indeed, the lowest bid and to give the company time to distribute the trash containers required throughout the city."

Palmer said both businesses will require customers to use company containers. Currently, Waste Management does not require special containers.

Also, the pickup will go to three days each week, and not be completed in one day as is now the case.
