Prentiss shows passion, inspiration to her students

Fifth-grade math teacher at Barberton Middle School, Jennifer Prentiss, was named to the 2012 Summit County Teaching Team to represent Barberton and was recently honored at the 2012 Summit County Education Celebration.

Prentiss is known for her passion for teaching to most, but to Jolene Reinhart she is also known as "a very memorable hiring." Reinhart is the educational consultant at Summit County Educational Services and was the principal Prentiss began her career with.

Lake Anna Park is blooming for this weekend's Mum Fest

The grounds of Lake Anna park are filling up with various colors of mums as Barberton's Mum Festival kicks off this weekend.

The 22nd Annual Mum Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Public service announcement to be filmed at Barberton Public Library

BARBERTON: A public service announcement, created by children ages 8-12, is currently in production at the Barberton Public Library.

Kids Connect is a new program funded by a grant from the Barberton Community Foundation. The grant also allows the library to purchase software to be used for editing, which the library will use for future projects.

Labor Day parade celebrates Barberton's past and present

BARBERTON: Residents lined the streets Monday to celebrate Labor Day and to honor the laborers who built their city.

The Barberton High School marching band performed during the parade, which also featured horses, political parties and supporters, Boy Scout troops and more as they all marched along the Lake Anna route.

BARBERTON: Labor Day celebrations will light the skies and fill the air with sounds of the '50s and '60s as Barberton prepares to celebrate Sunday.

The Van-Dells will perform to kick off the weekend at 7 p.m. at Lake Anna Park, followed by fireworks.

Barberton officials, residents seek suggestions during Flood Action Committee meeting

BARBERTON: Residents and city officials gathered Wednesday evening to hold the first public Flood Action Committee meeting. 

Mayor Bill Judge, Utilities Director Jim Stender and members of the committee addressed a crowd of about 50 concerned citizens at Community Holiness Church.

Barberton offers open house for its two new elementary schools

BARBERTON: Students at Barberton Elementary Schools East and West were offered a chance to check out the newly constructed buildings on Thursday.

Smiles, "oohs" and "aahs" came from every direction as the students and their families roamed the halls.

Barberton Community Foundation seeks local nominations

The Barberton Community Foundation is taking nominations for the 13th annual Community Recognition Dinner, which will take place on Nov. 8 at Prime 93.

Nominations must be received by the Foundation no later than 5 p.m. Sept. 7. The nominations will be passed on to an independent committee.

Levy failure leaves school officials with tough decisions

Silence filled the front room of Barberton's Green Diamond Grille & Pub as school officials sat in front of iPads, cell phones, and televisions awaiting results of Tuesday's Special Election.

Barberton City Schools Emergency Operating Levy failed by 504 votes.
